Why stubble burning has become such a big problem in the past decade?

A public health emergency has been declares in response the air pollution Till 5th Nov. all schools have been shut down and All types of construction & industrial activities has stopped for next 10 days. From the 4th Nov. Odd even scheme have been set to resume. So it is Crystal clear that the life threatening season of air pollution has returned.

The question that arises here is why does this recur every year?

Compare to last year & upon analyzing data. Is our situation getting from bad to worse. Or is there a perceptible improvement? What are the reason behind this & what could be the possible solution for this?

Not only for Delhi, but the truth remains that air pollution is a national issue. And it covers the entire north- region. But again  a question arises why media only focuses on Delhi why not on the entire north region. There is a government agency called SAFAR that comes under the aegis of ministry of earth sciences. The full form which is system of air quality & weather recasting and This government agency monitors the air quality And also is conducts a lot of research regarding it.

According to the data of SAFAR, as on Nov 1st 2019, the pollution pervasive in Delhi today, 46% repulsive of that lies upon the stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana also Between 2016-18, the incidents of stubble burning were on the decline. But there was an increase of 40% in 2019.

What is the reason behind their increase could be. But according to the researches all blame goes to the government of Haryana & Punjab. Because they have been ineffective in compensating the farmers, in order to give them incentive to stop stubble burning.

A question might arise in everyone’s that why stubble burning is done in the first place ? And why did it not happen 50 years before to today?

The reason behind this Delhi Air Pollution is simple

combined mechanical harvesters also 50 years years ago also when the farmers had to harvest their crops they did it manually. The mechanical harvesting began getting popular from the 1990s. When they harvest the crops they leave behind the stalk of the earth. They do not cut the crops close to the ground. They cut it from 2 feet above. What thus leads to is the presence of the remnants of the stalks inside the soil. In order to save their time & money, the farmers, instead of cutting the remaining stalk they just set fire to the entire farm.

After 2009, the stubble burning became even more popular.

However, some of the measures were taken by the government also.

Government took some actions for this stubble burning

  1. Fine for burning.
  2. Collect And use stubble
  3. Happy seeder(machine).

When we measure pollution, we can do it by a lot of different methods

  1. We could look at the hourly rate. This is what reading did the pollutometer record in one hour.
  2. We could observe the daily pollution rate.
  3. We could check the pollution level of every hour. And divide it by 24 hours to get an average daily pollution.
  4. Can average out the daily pollution to calculate how much pollution is taking place in a year.

As Delhi public  lives in a polluted environment. It’s important for them to take some measures to keep their selves pollution free.

Dust Mask and Filter Cartridge Ratings

Respiratory Filters come in a variety of ratings that relate to how the respirator performs (how much it filters) and what environment type it is designed to be used in. When choosing a respirator it’s important to understand that as the letter rating and number rating increase, breathing fatigue will increase. While you certainly don’t want to choose a rating that is too low, you don’t necessarily always want to pick a P100 filter for every application – particularly if you’re just looking for a simple dust mask to do home improvement work. Typically, an end user will find an N95 respirator cooler, and easier to breath through than a P99 or P95 dust mask.

Respirator Rating Letter Class

  • N – Not oil resistant
  • R – Resistant to oil
  • P – Oil Proof

Respirator Rating Number Class

  • 95 – Removes 95% of all particles that are at least 0.3 microns in diameter
  • 99 – Removes 99% of particles that are at least 0.3 microns in diameter
  • 100 – Removes 99.97% of all particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter or larger. HE or HEPA quality filter.

Moreover, In the market there are many dusk masks which are in variety  and works in different manner too. So here are the  Best 3 masks which Delhi people should use:

  1. N99 and N100 air masks

The N99 and N100 air masks are capable of filtering PM 2.5 airborne particulate matter with up to 99 to 99.97 percent efficiency But these masks are not resistant against oil-based pollutants.
